$\begingroup$ Chern insulators must break time-reversal symmetry and topological insulators require time-reversal symmetry for protection. Both of them have nontrivial band structures and edge/surface states, the difference being that TI is nontrivial only with time-reversal symmetry (and the edge states are protected by the symmetry). $\endgroup$ – Meng Cheng Dec 30 '15 at 20:33
2021-04-12 · Two-and-a-half years ago, Charles Kane and Eugene Mele received the 2019 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The award recognized their theories that predicted the existence of topological insulators, a new class of material with the unique property of being an electrical insulator on the inside and having a surface that conducts electricity.
Topological insulators have stimulated intense interests in condensed-matter physics, optics, acoustics and mechanics, usually with a focus on the spin degree of freedom. However, the orbital Techniques such as angle-resolved photoemission spectrometry (ARPES), advanced solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) or scanning-tunnel microscopy (STM) together with key principles of topological insulators such as spin-locked electronic states, the Dirac point, quantum Hall effects and Majorana fermions are illuminated in individual chapters and are described in a clear and logical form. Three dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter with an insulating bulk and topologically protected conducting surface states. So far, Bi 2 Se 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 Topological insulators are electronic materials that have a bulk band gap like an ordinary insulator but have protected conducting states on their edge or surface. These states are possible due to the combination of spin-orbit interactions and time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator is a quantum spin Hall insulator, which is a close cousin of the integer quantum Hall state. There are few mistakes in the equations and the physical explanations behind topological insulators are forgotten throughout a vast quantity of equations - however, this may be a reflex of some difficulty of the author to express himself in English.

Other materials, like glass, do not. A certain kind of material, called a topological (cd) Energy band diagram of 2D and 3D topological insulator in momentum space, showing the formation of 1D and 2D Dirac cone, respectively. The first 3D topological insulator to be realized experimentally was Bi 1 − x Sb x. Bismuth in its pure state, is a semimetal with a small electronic band gap.
In contrast, a topological insulator may undergo a quantum phase transition that closes its band gap and changes its fundamental materials parameters, but no symmetry is spontaneously broken. In this sense, a topological insulator falls outside the traditional classification schemes for solid matter.
A remarkable and useful property of these materials is that they support unidirectional spin-polarized propagation at their surfaces. Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter which cannot be adiabatically connected to conventional insulators and semiconductors. They are characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and gapless edge or surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry.

A topological insulator is a material with time reversal symmetry and topologically protected surface states. These surface states continuously connect bulk conduction and valence bands, as illustrated in Figure 2 b.
