2019-02-26 · Josephine Baker was an American entertainer who became famous in France in the 1920s for her singing, dancing, and scandalous costumes. But even more amazing was her passion for civil rights. She fought against segregation and supported the French Red Cross and Resistance during WWII.

Her performance style has also been influential. Diana Ross, a fan of Baker, performed in Bob Mackie-designed outfits similar to Baker's and reenacted similar poses of the latter in many photo sessions. By 1952, Baker had been the toast of Paris for decades. The bisexual singer, actress, and dancer became so revered there that one only needed to say “Josephine” or “La Baker” and everyone knew who she was. But beloved though she was in France, she found it heartbreaking that she wasn’t as loved in her own country.
