Plutarch was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia, a district of Greece. He was educated in philosophy in Athens and spent several years in Rome, where he lectured on philosophy. In his last days he was a magistrate and priest in his native city. He died after the year 119. Plutarch was not a critical historian.
