Learn. The goal of MCAT is to reward students who use good time management and have good strategic ways of thinking about things. The AAMC is not trying to trick or punish you but reward the savvy test takers and those who know what they’re doing. The MCAT’s three non-CARS sections (Bio/Biochem, Chem/Phys, Psyc/Soc) evaluate the following skills: Skill 1: Knowledge of Scientific Concepts and Principles — 35% of questions These questions test how well you know concrete material (i.e. what is in your textbooks). For the Chemistry/Physics, Biology/Biochemistry, and Psychology/Sociology sections of the MCAT, you should aim to spend 8 minutes per passage on the 10 passages and 1 minute per standalone question on the 15 standalone questions.

This section has 9 passages with 5 to 7 questions per passage. In total, the exam lasts about seven and a half hours, if you include the time for breaks. So let’s go section by section. Let’s start with the chem/phys section which consists of 30% general chemistry, 25% biochemistry, 25% physics, 15% organic chemistry, and 5% biology.

The undergraduate science courses represented on this section are broken down as follows: General Chemistry- 30%; Introductory For example, if your band for the CARS section was a 126-128 and your band for Chem/Phys was a 123-124, you know that you’ll need to adjust your study plan for the latter in some significant way in order to bring that score up into the competitive range. Section 1: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. We’ll call it the Chem/Phys or C/P section.

The final section of the MCAT is the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills exam. This section will have 53 multiple choice questions that you will be given 90 minutes to complete. It is similar to the reading comprehension section that you will find on other standardized tests, like the SATs and GREs.

Try to make approximations so that you can do the math quickly. On the Chem/Phys section, your MCAT time per question is approximately 1.4 minutes (95 minutes for 67 questions). There simply isn't time for lengthy, complicated math!
